Welcome Back.! Term 3: This term Room 5 students will be studying Matariki, a constellation of 9 stars seen through our night skies from June. In the past Matariki resembled the start of the New Year. Planting would commence and whaanau would come together in unison to do this.



We aim to:

1. Cook a Matariki vegetable soup and share with whanau

2. Learn the names of the Whanau of Matariki

3. Learn some aspects and characteristics of the whanau of Matariki

4. Celebrate whanau and know this connection this with ‘Te Rito o te harakeke’

5. Write a class story about Matariki

6. Learn the names of some of the native plants in our school

7. Make a Matariki mobile with pressed plants

8. Plant some vegetables to celebrate Matariki

9. Have a kite afternoon to celebrate Matariki

10. Know the name of our local hapuu (subtribe) and iwi (tribe)
